The Denver Post urged Senators to pass the Serve America Act, in a powerful editorial on March 26, 2009. The editorial focused on the need to invest in innovative, effective, programs that address the challenges we face as a nation – and to expand opportunities for thousands of Americans to participate in national service, and serve as a workforce for change, particularly in this time of economic crisis.

Considering the trillions being spent on bailouts for failing companies, the $6 billion that would be spent on this program over five years is a wise investment in the infrastructure and fabric of our country.

In a grim economy, where hundreds of jobs are shed daily, Congress needs to make this small investment in human capital. It will pay dividends for years to come.
