Citizen School’s Architecture Apprenticeships Inspire Both Mentors and Students

Students of Citizen Schools—an after school apprenticeship program for underserved middle schoolers—were credited for questioning architectural disparities among neighborhoods and bringing to light a lack of diversity within the architecture industry in a recent article by the American Institute of Architects. Citizen Schools strives to give hands-on training in a possible career path, an experience that has shown students that they can affect change in their own communities. AIA mentor Gretchen Schneider says, “It’s time that those who design this built world reflect those who live in it. As a profession we’re not there yet, but Citizen Schools gives an opportunity to affect that.”
