Once again, we are compelled to speak out in response to unconscionable violence that has claimed the lives of students and educators in yet another community in our country. Our hearts are with the parents, family members, friends, and loved ones in Nashville who are experiencing grief and trauma that has become entirely too familiar.
The staff at America Forward, the organizations that make up the America Forward Coalition, and our partners spend every day working to make safe, healthy learning and development possible for every student and young person across the country. Supporting and strengthening school communities is what drives us. And it’s as advocates for students, educators, staff, and families that we join the millions of people around the country calling on policymakers to finally take action and reject the notion that horrific scenes like those in Nashville are simply part of life in America.
Common sense gun reform – along with policies that meaningfully address trauma and support mental health – is essential to ensuring that everyone in our school communities can learn, grow, and flourish safely, free from the constant threat of gun violence. That’s our goal at America Forward, and we will continue working with our Coalition organizations, partners, and allies to make it a reality.
